What is the difference between a peg and a Mickey button?

PEG tubes have long tubing and are often the device used for initial placement. A MIC-KEY, a trademarked name, commonly refers to a lower profile gastric tubes (or “button,” (Image 2)) that sits at the level of the skin. Do you check residual on a mickey button?

What is a PEG tube?

The percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube provides nutrition for patients who are having trouble swallowing. The internal bumper rests in the stomach, and the adapter comes out through the skin of the abdomen.

How do I know if my PEG tube is moving?

With PEG tube, persistent vomiting. Balloon deflates/bursts. Check external length of tube before each feeding. Mark feeding tube 1” from where it enters the body (so you can tell later if it’s moved). Use a tube attachment device (catheter/tube holder) or careful taping of external tube to nose/cheek/abdomen/clothing to avoid pulling or migration.

What is a G-Button and how do I use it?

Like a PEG-tube, you can feed your child or give medicine through a G-button. The button has a water-filled balloon on the inside that holds it in place. G-buttons need to be replaced for different reasons (balloon leaks, your child grows, etc.). We recommend changing them every four months and will show you how to do this.
